14 Iceland - Coming Home - Sjonni's Friends

I thought this was another potential winner of the whole shebang, in an Olsen Brothers way, but now I'm not sure it's lively enough. If the story of this song is being relayed by commentators across Europe though, it'll do well. I was almost in tears when I heard this the other day. (The guy who was supposed to perform it died earlier this year, just before the Icelandic final. He was about 36 and died of a heart attack. His widow rewrote the lyric and his friends are performing it. She's here in Düsseldorf. It must be very hard for her.

Qualifying? Yes.

We have our winner!

Is it too soon to say this?

We need Iceland to pick this first, admittedly, but if they do, could Yohanna go one place better than her 2009 success, being Eurovision runner-up to the runaway Rybak?

This is rather marvellous. I've no idea what it's about, except that the title must mean 'Night'. What matters is that, five minutes after playing it once, the song is on loop in my head. This is what you need to win Eurovision. It all bodes very well. And, to be honest, I really, really want Iceland to notch up their first win at some point in my lifetime, even if Reykjavik is completely unaffordable.

Eurovision 2008 - Chig's 8th favourite song

Iceland - 'This Is My Life' - Eurobandið

There are two other fabulous songs in the world called 'This is my life' and this doesn't quite match up to either Shirley Bassey or Eartha Kitt, but it's massively popular (with the usual suspects, it must be said). It's dated, the lyric is a bag of selections from the rhyming dictionary, but it's fun. Iceland has already received the kiss of death from the gays at London's Retro bar, where it won their overall vote, so expect it to sink without trace after providing a stunning opening to semi-final two.

This is the best video, bar none, that I've seen this year. It taps in perfectly to the YouTube generation. Watch it from the beginning to the very end!

Iceland, send this!

And we were doing so well.

I mean, the self-imposed 'no mention of the E word until December' rule was being strictly observed. It's usually Albania who set the ball rolling by choosing their Eu*ov*si*n song in their late December song festival. (It had been running for over forty years anyway, so when they joined Eu*ov*si*n in 2004, they decided to use the contest to pick their song and leave it in December. Who could blame them?)

This year though, we have been trying to ignore the fact that Iceland, for reasons best known to a handful of TV execs in Reykjavic, are already five weeks into their weekend heats to choose their song for Beograd/Belgrade.

Until this weekend, when this appeared. Welcome to 'Ho, ho, ho, we say hey, hey, hey' by Barði Jóhannsson. For some reason, this cannot be ignored. Brace yourself for the first World of Chig featured song of the (very long) Eurovision 2008 season. It's all downhill after this...
